Traumatic Memory

The issue. Among the several kinds of memory, one stands apart: traumatic memory. Its singularity lies in the powerful negative emotions it can awaken — the feelings, sensations and stimuli bound to the memory can fire at any moment, leaving the patient in diffuse anxiety. This course is the fruit of a partnership between Boris Cyrulnik, the University of Mons / “Education and Families” (where he teaches) and FormationsPsy.ca (H4 Éditions).

The need. Participants will explore what neuroscience and epigenetics reveal about trauma’s impact on the brain, and about the protective factors behind resilience. Concrete accounts of lived experience make visible the role of security and its bearing on traumatic experience — memories, events and their repercussions.

Objectives

  • Understand what traumatic memory is
  • Assess what sensory isolation does to the brain
  • Distinguish the different types of memory — procedural, traumatic, semantic, episodic

Duration. Two hours and fifteen minutes of online training in seven parts, followed remotely with no time limit; a 20-question test is available at the end.

Trainer. Boris Cyrulnik, neuropsychiatrist and director of education at the University of Toulon (France), also teaches at the University of Mons in Belgium. He is the author of many books, including “A Marvelous Misfortune” and “The Ugly Ducklings” (Éditions Odile Jacob).
